Peer-to-peer business learning groups
2007 Impact statement- Karszes, Jason
abstract
Efforts focused on creation and support of peer-to-peer learning groups across the state to foster in-depth education and interaction among dairy producers concerning dairy business analysis, dairy business performance, decision making, and other areas focusing around business management skills. Data collected from farms utilizing either the Dairy Farm Business Summary or the Dairy Profit Monitor forms the basis for presentations and facilitations of these groups. Contact and experiences with producers within these groups provides insight into current issues and decisions being made of farms, and provides feedback for future direction of program efforts.

issue being addressed
With an increasing complex dairy industry segmented by different management approaches, changing trends, regulatory, and environmental issues, there is increasing demands for business financial and management educational programs. Peer-to-peer learning groups provide a forum for extension outreach and discussions among producers, guided by PRO-DAIRY, to meet this need.
response
We have developed materials based on farmer participation in either the Dairy Farm Business Summary Program or the Dairy Profit Monitor Program to present individual farm data in the peer-to-peer learning group and foster discussion on management areas that impact overall business performance. Educational materials focusing on specific management topics, such as economic decision making and budgeting, are developed and presented on an as-needed basis. These materials have been used to support and expand existing groups. Two new groups have been facilitated in the last year.
impact assessment
To date, over 90% of the farms participating in peer-to-peer learning groups have made improvements within their business due to participation. Over 80% of participants have returned for follow-up meetings, and over 50% have visited with other members outside of the formula meeting.
