"The Impact of September 11 on Road Fatalities: The Other Lives Lost to Terrorism," and "The Impact of Post 9/11 Airport Security Measures on the Demand for Air Travel," with Vrinda Kadiyali and Daniel H. Simon

2006 Impact statement

abstract

We demonstrate two effects of post-9/11 airport security. First, security hassles and a fear of terrorist attacks prompted many travelers to drive instead fly. Because driving is more dangerous than flying, traveler fatalities increased. Second, demand for commercial air travel fell by about 5 percent following the initiation of tighter security procedures post-9/11.
